dood is running with the ball at full speed in a straight line towards the endzone.

he is being followed close behind by a teammate (we'll say he's 1 yard behind)

at the moment the ball carrier reaches the 10 yard line, he attempts to pitch the ball to his teammate... the ball travels thru the air... and the teammate tries to catch it at the 9 yard line (still a yard behind the original ball carrier who has continued moving forward)... the ball hits the ground and is recovered by the defense at the 9.

where should the ball be spotted and what team should have possession?

to clarify:

at instant of attempted lateral:
BC = 10 yard line
BCT = 11 yead line

at instant of dropped ball
BC = 8 yard line
BCT = 9 yard line

ball recovered at 9 by defense.

YOU MAKE THE CALL

*oh and this is beyond the line of scrimmage*

the original ball carrier attempted an illegal forward pass and it is a dead ball at the 10 with a penalty to be assessed for the illegal pass.

yes, his teammate was behind him and the ball stayed "behind" the original ball carrier, but it traveled FORWARD (regardless of it's release point and momentum... the ball went forward on the field from the 10 to the 9). The fumble was irrelavant since it was an illegal pass.

oh I forgot to mention this was all beyond the line of scrimmage... therefore a forward pass was not allowed.

I contend that the play in the rose bowl where Reggie Bush caught a pass... ran for like 30 yards... and then attempted a lateral (which has correctly been called a bonehead play)... was a FORWARD pass and it should have remained USC's ball at the spot of the pass minus 5.

we've got the RB on dvd and when this play came up when we watched it the other day I brought this up again (I had noticed it live as well)

Reggie tried shoving the ball to his teammate when reggie was right in front of a yard line moving forward, but his teammate first touched and dropped the pass on the other side of the line... the ball had travelled FORWARD and is therefore an illegal forward pass and should be dead at the spot... instead they called it a fumble and UT recovered. (see peeps, I'll admit incorrect rulings even if it hurts my team)

my roomies say that since the teammate was behind reggie at the time of the attempt, it would still be considered a legal lateral... uhhh... but the ball went FORWARD.
