there is no denying that we are oil-poor compared to many parts of the world.
is there oil beneath us? yes, but it's not always economically feasible to get at (and it's not just environmental regulations that make it impractical.)

in most cases, it's entirely environmental rabid-ism that prevents it (off the coast of florida, anwr, etc).
