Buses Deliver Voters from Atlanta

Four buses loaded with an estimated 250 to 300 displaced New Orleanians drove through the night from Atlanta, Ga. so the riders could vote for mayor and other city officials Saturday in the most important local election in memory.

The buses arrived before dawn at Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church in Central City, where voters were fed and participated in a brief rally. After the 6 a.m. opening of polls, voters were shuttled to their voting places around the city, said Ben Chao, a spokesman for the group.

The mass return of voters was organized by the Rev. Raphael Warnoc, pastor of Ebeneezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, in cooperation with Bishop Paul S. Morton of Greater St. Stephen. Morton was displaced to Atlanta and founded a new congregation there. He now divides his time between serving church members in the two cities.
