I still don't see your chinatown scenario as valid either..

If you are going to come to this country and attempt to make a living, at least learn to communicate with most of the people.

I mean I would presume myself to be an arrogant jackass if I went to another country and refused to try to speak their language and instead expected them to cater to me.

No one is saying you cant speak your native tongue, just that you also learn the native language, as well.

If someone is on a short trip it is fine, if someone plans on staying forever, they gotta learn..

but I would still feel like a jackass if I went on vacation and didnt even attempt to speak the local language.

If you're, say, Chinese, and you settle in SF China town, spending all your life peddling vegetables to the locals, English is optional.

Now, I am firmly against cutting people any slack in terms of official business due to their inability to speak English, but forcing them to learn it just so they can stay, isn't right.

Besides, the citizenship requires proficiency in English and U.S. History anyway. Without English you can't advance beyond greencard.

If you have a community that is completely seperated by language barriers from it's surrounding communities, that can be bad.

I just don't see it as a big deal. The troubles that arise with azn/african/arab immigrants in Europe stem from the fact that Europeans are largely arrogant, racist, elitist pricks. That's not the case here: here, if you stay on the good side of the law, you'll be fine. If you manage to succeed in this country, your worth will be measured stricly by your success, not by how well you speak the language or watch NASCAR and listen to country music. This freedom is precisely what made America so great, and this is why immigrants empower America, while at the same time those very same immigrants weaken Europe.

think about it... what are they doing?

they're moving into an already occupied land uninvited...

the indigenous peeps take too long to realize how MANY of the new peeps there are until it's too late...

then they start demanding rights and a voice...

they give items to the indigenous peeps which make them sick (unhealthy burritos!)

we taught them well!

if you live in a community where everybody understands spanish, what's the point at learning english?

it's not necessarily laziness. it could also just be spending your time doing other things that are of more value to you.

yours is an example of what you CAN do.

It doesn't address the morality...simply what you can get away with

like you should respect your elders, or you should be polite. Is it immoral to not repct your elders or to be rude? Well that is stretch because we think of morality in terms of "do not kill" but it does loosely inlcude expected behavior as well
